Cape Soya

If you are a seasoned traveler, one place you want to be sure to visit is the latitude N 45°, northernmost point of Japan!
A monument on the tip of Cape Soya, Lat. 45° 31’22” N, symbolizes the "northernmost point of Japan." The monument 5.44 meters high, is a triangular pyramid representing one point of the Northern Star. It is a place where you can really get a feel of being at the northernmost point.
Summer views are of course beautiful, but during the winter when the drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk washes up on the coast, and when you can see the mountains on Sakhalin in the distance on a clear day, it is absolutely marvelous.
Each year, the annual countdown event, "Hatsuhinode in Teppen" is held on December 31! Fireworks and torches light up the sky, souvenirs to mark the event are handed out, and tents are set up by visitors who enjoy the excitement and camp out to see the first sunrise of the year.
